Dejana Foundation Helps Keep Lacrosse Players Safer on Field

Schreiber's varsity boys' lacrosse team's spring season just began and the team is enjoying their new state-of-the art helmets.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Peter & Jeri Dejana Family Foundation, Schreiber High School’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team started the spring season with new helmets. The grant was made to the Athletic Association of the Port Washington Schools (AAPW) based on an appeal for newer, safer helmets.

The 40 new helmets that were purchased were selected based on the fact that they boast the highest possible safety rating. “This generous donation from the Dejana Foundation has, not only provided the entire varsity lacrosse team with the newest helmets, it now allows the athletic budget to purchase new helmets for Weber’s boys lacrosse teams this year,” Athletic Director Stephanie Joannon said. “Thank you, Peter & Jeri Dejana, for understanding the importance of keeping our young athletes safe and for the support of the boys lacrosse programs.”

“Sports are an integral part of becoming well-rounded adults,” Dejana Foundation Grant Administrator Jim Avena said. “We are so pleased to have been able to purchase the lacrosse team’s single most important piece of equipment.”

The AAPW secures donations and grant funding for various athletic programs throughout the Port Washington School District. Their board works with the School Board and administration, as well as team coaches, the district’s athletic director and parents who wish to be involved in helping to further sports in our community.

While the organization has raised money to support myriad initiatives, their first and most well known accomplishment they undertook was to fund and oversee construction of the Go Turf field, which is now used for multiple sports teams at Schreiber and Weber.
