The Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island will present a performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Mikado” on the following date: 8:00pm on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at The Jeanne Rimsky Theater at the Landmark on Main Street, 232 Main Street, Port Washington. The production features a full cast of performers, scenery and costumes, and the critically acclaimed Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Orchestra. Tickets are priced at $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors. Discounts are available for groups of ten or more. Additionally, two children under the age of 12 will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult who has purchased one full-price ticket. “The Mikado” is one of the most popular of the long line of “Savoy Operas” and one of the most often-performed pieces in the world and not without reason. Gilbert’s text is a masterpiece of comic writing to which Sullivan’s ever tuneful music is perfectly adapted, serving in a remarkable manner to set off the amusing character of the words. The Japanese setting supplies a refreshingly colorful background, although, of course the characters are by no means Japanese, but ourselves in a very thin disguise. This opera has delighted audiences for more than a century and spawned a number of imitations. But none were nearly as good as the original, which represented both Gilbert and Sullivan at the height of their creative geniuses. The score includes such Gilbert & Sullivan classics as “A Wand’ring Minstrel”, “Three Little Maids”, and “Tit-willow”.
