On Wednesday, March 16, 2010 at 7:30 pm, Lucy Davidson, officer and trustee of the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society will present a lecture on the Sands Family Burial Ground, located in Sands Point, NY. Her talk will be illustrated by photography of the burial ground, captured by society member, Pat Blumlein.
Originally given to the Sands family by John Sands I (1649-1712) and enlarged upon by John Sands II (1683-1763), the burial ground became a community grave site for the numerous Sands and non-Sands who helped to build early Port Washington.
Ms. Davidson will discuss what life was like on the north shore of pre-revolutionary Long Island. She will also talk about burial practices of the day, and elaborate upon the various decorative motifs and symbols found on the grave stones in the burial ground. And most important, she will tell the stories of some of these early forefathers…and mothers.
