Free Screening: Documentary on Fracking Set for Thursday in Port Washington

Director Renard Cohen will answer questions after the film.

Director Renard Cohen will be at Soundview Movie Theater in Port Washington on Thursday at 7 p.m., where viewers can see a free screening of “Ground Swell Rising,” a new documentary about fracking.

The film looks at the “people from all walks of life and all sides of the political spectrum who are dedicating themselves to resisting, slowing down or stopping fracking,” according to groundswellrising.com.

Port Washington resident Sharon Tracy played a big role in bringing the movie to Soundview Movie Theater.

As Tracy tells it, she’d seen a screening of “Gasland” at the Port Washington Public Library.

“I was not aware of the pitfalls of fracking and when I had asked friends, they either never really knew what it was or said drilling for natural gas is the right direction for our country,” she said. “So I decided to do my small part by approaching Jordan Desner, owner at the Soundview theater” about another screening.

Tracy also spoke with the moderator at the library screening, Patti Wood of Grassroots Environmental Education, and plans to bring “Ground Swell Rising” to Soundview on Thursday fell into place.

Cohen, who has produced programs for PBS and Food Network, will conduct a question and answer session after the film.
