Long Island School Superintendents' Salaries Ranked Highest to Lowest

Your school superintendent may get a hefty salary. Here's the list of LI superintendents and their pay for the 2016-17 school year.

Ever wonder how much superintendents make on Long Island?

Four superintendents have wages set to exceed $400,000 during the 2016-17 school year, according to data provided by the New York State Education Department.

The highest paid superintendent is Henry L. Grishman of the Jericho School District who (including salary, benefits and other wages) will make $438,349 this upcoming school year. Overall, William H. Johnson of the Rockville Centre School District has the highest salary at $328,146. Three Long Island superintendents make a salary greater than $300,000.

Compared to New Jersey, Long Island superintendents have the bigger pockets. Twenty-nine Long Island superintendents have a salary of at least $250,000, while only three New Jersey superintendents made that much last school year. The list of New Jersey superintendents' salaries can be found here.

School districts throughout New York reported their numbers to the NYSED. Although the data is self-reported by each district and is unaudited, it does “not necessarily represent the whole state as there are districts that are not required to report the data. In addition, some districts may not use certain titles,” NYSED says.

To fully understand the results, clarification from individual districts may be necessary, NYSED says.

Superintendent wages are broken into three categories and then added together for a grand total. The three categories include “salaries,” “fringe” and “other.”

NYSED defines the three categories:

  • Salaries: The wages budgeted on an annual basis for the position.
  • Fringe: Fringe benefits are allowances and services provided by employers as compensation. The cost of fringe benefits includes employer contributions for social security, employee life, health, unemployment and worker’s compensation insurance, pension plan costs and other similar benefits allowable under established written policies.
  • Other: The annualized monetary value of any and all forms of compensation not included under Salaries or Fringe. Examples of this wage could be employer expenses for additional insurance and/or annuities, housing allowance, moving allowance, the personal use of a vehicle and/or residence, professional organization membership fees or dues and other expenses.

Salaries can be read in the following format: (salary); (benefits); (other); (total). Some school districts did not have "other" wages listed.
