Manorhaven to Form Ethics Board; Initiative Follows Village Ethics Seminar

A new code of ethics will replace a code that was adopted in 1970, and only slightly modified in 2013.

The Village of Manorhaven Board of Trustees will hold a public hearing on the adoption of a new code of ethics, and the formation of a Village ethics board in the coming weeks.

“Village officers and employees are committed to ethical conduct in the discharge of their duties,” said Mayor Jim Avena. “For the first time in forty-six years, the Village of Manorhaven will have a new, modern code of ethics. The purpose of the new code of ethics will be to foster integrity in government and promote public confidence. The new ethics board will be a resource that will provide Village officers and employees with ethics advice and help them to discharge their duties under the code of ethics.”

Avena decided to form a Village ethics board following the Village’s recent seminar on ethics and best practices. The seminar was held on September 28, 2016 and was presented by Steve Leventhal, the Village Attorney, along with Jeff Blinkoff, counsel to the Village Board of Zoning Appeals. Mr. Leventhal is a recognized expert in the field of local government ethics, and has lectured and written extensively on the subject. The Village will continue to hold similar seminars to educate Village officers and employees.
