NHL's Rookie Of The Year Celebrates, Shows Off Calder Trophy At Local LI Restaurant

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Louie's in Port Washington became the celebratory spot for the National Hockey League's Rookie of the Year Matthew Schaefer earlier this month.

Schaefer was selected first overall by the Islanders in the 2025 NHL draft and won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman rookie.

Gennaro Sbarro, owner of Louie's Prime Steak & Seafood, said he was thrilled to welcome the 18-year-old Islanders phenom, team executives, family, and close friends to his bay view restaurant on Main Street.

"We were so honored to host Matthew's celebratory dinner here at Louie's," Sbarro said. "He is a down to earth, talented young man and will do great things in his life."

The NHL and the NY Islanders shared a photo after Schaefer's celebration on May 13.
