Farmers' markets are a great way to support local agriculture and sustainable food systems, and actually meet the people who grow your food! On the North Shore of Long Island, one of the best places to do that is at the Port Washington Farmers' Market, which officially opens for it's eighteenth season on Saturday morning, June 8th at 8am on the Town Dock.

The market, which is the only one in New York State featuring primarily organic fruits, vegetables and other food products, is a project of Grassroots Environmental Education, a non-profit organization based in Port Washington and founded by lifelong Port residents Patti and Doug Wood.

"When you buy food at the market, you're buying food that has been harvested just a few hours ago," says Patti. "It's not like the supermarket where the food was picked and packed three weeks ago and then trucked two thousand miles to get here. This is a local, sustainable food system, and our market was created to support this important part of our economy.”

In addition to the two organic farms from the North Fork that anchor the market, patrons can find purveyors of fish, pasta, flowers, bread, olive oil, honey, gluten-free baked goods and other food-based items. Organic coffee and hot (organic) blueberry muffins and other treats are available in the cafe. Bring your own bags!

Residents can track the activities of the market by following the market on Facebook. For more information or to volunteer, please call 883-0887.
