Port Washington Education Foundation Awards 2014-15 Grants

All seven schools in the district to benefit with programs made possible by PWEF.

The Port Washington Education Foundation recently announced the recipients of its 2014-15 grants. Recipients included all seven public schools in the district. To get involved with the PWEF, visit its website.

  • The Bio Bus Dawn Epp, Nancy LaBella, Jennifer Rothenberg, Mathieu Lanfant, Nancy Gordon, Robyn Doubert (HSA Co-Presidents)
    The Bio Bus visits all fourth-grade students! This solar- powered science lab on wheels is ready for lessons in biology, environmental science, and physical chemistry.
  • Expressive Elocution-Vocal Empowerment Elise May
    A standards based program to help vocally empower and prepare students to present speeches, reports, dramatic enactments, debates, and themselves in interviews and performances.
  • Enhancing Family Math Night Sabrina Massone, Lisa Cooper, Ruth Diaz, Lori Garcia, Heather O’Shea
    The purchase of “Nifty Numbers Family Math Night” kits will enhance the Elementary Math Nights by providing additional activities to students and their families that are aligned with curriculum.
  • Elementary Road Runners: Family Run-4-Fun Day Megaera Regan, Brandy Miller, Richard Miglietta, Mike Cain, Kathy Doughty, Sean Dooley, Lauren Bishar, Jeannine Fallon
    Family races, games, and other activities help increase awareness of wellness, including physical activity, sun safety, and nutrition.
  • Brown Bag Challenge Dr. Wafa Westervelt
    Elementary students get lunchtime enrichment opportunities with activities that integrate mathematics, science and literacy skills developed by The Cradle of Aviation’s education department.

Daly Pre-K

  • Pre-Kindergarten Espark Technology Jamie Nolan
    Pre-K students will use fun and cutting-edge technology and apps to promote academic growth. Espark aligns educational apps to accelerate student’s growth and overcome identified gaps in student performance.

Guggenheim

  • Tabletizing Elementary Band Aaron Prindle
    Using the Nexus 7 tablet, band students play along with accompaniment recordings as an introduction to playing in a musical ensemble.
  • SMARTer Resources in the Resource RoomSara Chin, Terri Lerner-Frey
    Resource room teachers will share a SMART Board to create engaging and interactive lessons.
  • Building Narrative Skills Across the DistrictSilvia Ostrowski, Deidre McCooey, Patrick Faraday, Shantay Betty-Denton, Gloria Vaserstein, Amy Branch, Loreen Maroof, Patrick Nash, Nora Hickey, Marion Traynor
    English 9 self-contained and INVEST life-skills students and K- 5 self-contained children gain comprehension skills with writing and presenting stories of picture books.

Manorhaven

  • PORT: Providing Opportunities for Real-World Teaching Bridge O’Keefe-Green, Marialina Corbo, Pat Charles, Christine Vasilev, Lucy Portugal Gable
    Through partnerships with the Tilles Center and the Sands Point Preserve, ESL students in grades K-5 have enriching real-life learning experiences that will support art, ELA, history, and science curricula.
  • Multicultural Mentors II: Literacy Exploration and Cultural Exchange Susan Goldstein, Lucy Portugal Gable, Elise May
    First-time English Language Learners use literature and student writing to inspire and develop cultural voices. High School students serve as mentors for younger students.
  • Early Birds Megaera Regan, Lauren Bishar, Lucy Portugal Gable, Bridge O’Keefe-Green, Marialina Corbo, Pat Charles, Christine Vasilev
    This before-school physical activity program helps improve academic performance for children who are at risk.

Port Washington Parent Resource Center

  • Stepping Stones Class Leila Noor
    This program prepares at-risk, immigrant children with limited English proficiency for our district’s Pre-K program.

Schreiber

  • Vex Robotics Competition at Schreiber Donald G. Schaefer
    This project will allow the Robotics Club to host a competition at Schreiber High School.
  • Professional Studio Lighting Benjamin M. Benfield, Kris Murphy, Peter Koch
    With professional lighting, students gain a better perspective of subject matter, produce higher quality work, and are better prepared to pursue photography in college or as a career.

    Eleventh graders in STEP, ESL and targeted groups go on college tours to provide hands-on experience in the college process for students who otherwise have limited exposure to these opportunities.

  • 3D Printing and Design David Miller, Donald Schaefer, Bradley Fitzgerald, Ira Pernick
    Students participating in the 3D printing courses will be able to scan 3D objects using laser technology in order to augment and enhance designs and recreate them with the 3D printer.
  • “Around the Table:” Exploring and Creating the Dining Artifacts of Family Traditions Miranda Best, Terri Hall, Sonia Arora (Gold Coast Arts), Jude Amsel (visiting artist)
    An intergenerational exploration of personal and cultural history through art. Students design clay objects for the table inspired by their family stories and traditions.

Sousa

  • Yummy or Yucky? Using Yoga to Teach Students to Monitor and Adjust Emotions Dr. David Meoli, Dena Vigilis, Gail Grossman
    Students in grades 3-5 participate in yoga sessions to learn relaxation and stress reduction techniques.
  • Project Soar Janet Moser, Julie Anzalone (teachers) Rebecca Schwartz, PH.D, Dina Maiella, Claudine McKinney (parents)
    Encourage summer reading for grades K-4 with backpacks including a book, a journal, pencils and information for parents about literacy-focused activities and resources.
  • Expanding Expression Donna Braun, Josephine Lacerenza
    The tools in this program allow a multi-sensory approach to improve oral and written language for speech and language students.

Weber

  • Yoga in the 6th Grade Karen Mulqueen
    All sixth-grade students participate in an introductory yoga class connecting to their study of ancient India.
  • Terrance Simien & The Zydeco Experience Landmark on Main Street
    Grammy Award winner Terrance Simien at Weber! Each performance includes demonstrations about instrumentation, rhythm and the history of zydeco.
  • Sustaining the Spark with Kindle E-Readers Maureen Peraza, Meghan Duffy, Renee Kornfeld, Susan McAuliffe
    Students who receive reading and writing help have the opportunity to use Kindle E-readers in order to continue to increase their motivation to read for pleasure.
  • Streaming with Models Irving Tom, CarrieAnn Lindstadt-Iurka
    New stream tables enhance understanding of geological processes for Science 8 students.
  • Stereoscope Science for the Middle School Chris Buchman, Maria Shapiro
    Stereoscopes allow seventh-grade students to discover the parts of plants, flowers, and fungus and also compare and contrast different kingdoms of life.
  • Songwriting with Lucy Jeff Moss
    Students in 8th grade Blue House will experience what it is like to be a songwriter and musician working with Lucy Kaplansky to develop their own songs. Volunteers will polish and perform their songs for the class.
  • SMART Technology Doriz Berlin
    Spanish students with different learning styles will benefit from SMART Board technology in the classroom.
  • Role Playing World War II Literature Stacey Portmore-Davies
    Eighth-grade students in the Yellow House will be taught improvisational skills by Broadway actress Barbara Tirrell through a series of workshops. The students use these skills to develop a deep understanding of the people affected by World War II through performances of the characters in the novels read during their WWII book clubs.
  • Lego Mindstorm Robotics Tommy Stepanek
    Weber students will have the opportunity to explore computer systems by designing, constructing and programming a robot.
  • Engineering our Future Michael Shampanier
    All sixth-graders design, build, and test truss-beam scale model bridges with a new Pitsco structure tester.
