Port Washington Police District Awards Construction Contract for New Headquarters Project

Construction Expected to Begin in Spring 2026

The Port Washington Police District’s Board of Commissioners is proud to announce that Aurora Construction has been awarded the construction contract for the District’s new headquarters project, subject to the fulfillment of certain conditions. Aurora Contractors, a well-respected construction management and general contracting firm has extensive experience delivering large-scale projects across Long Island and the New York metropolitan region.

“We are pleased to award this contract to a construction firm that has a proven track record of delivering high-quality projects throughout our region,” said Sean McCarthy, Chairman, Port Washington Police District Board of Commissioners. “Aurora Contractors brings a depth of experience and professionalism that will ensure this project is completed efficiently and to the highest standards all while remaining on budget.”

The first phase of construction will focus primarily on site construction and foundations for the future building. Construction activity is currently expected to begin at during the Spring of 2026 marking the next major milestone in the District’s effort to develop a modern facility that will serve the Port Washington community for decades to come. Many key preparatory steps for the new headquarters have already been completed by the District, including demolition of the former structures on the site and environmental remediation work necessary to prepare the property for redevelopment.

The District has negotiated a Project Labor Agreement (PLA) with the Long Island Building Trades Council for the construction of the new headquarters. The agreement will ensure that skilled labor is utilized throughout the project, helping maintain high standards of workmanship, promote workforce stability and keep the project on schedule.

Founded in 1983, Aurora Contractors has built a strong reputation for managing complex projects across a wide range of sectors including commercial, residential, institutional and hospitality developments. Among the firm’s notable projects are the expansion and renovation of Jake’s 58 Casino & Hotel in Islandia and the Belmont Park Retail Village at UBS.

“This project represents an investment in the future of public safety in Port Washington,” continued McCarthy. “A modern facility will provide our officers and staff with the tools and space they need to serve the community effectively while also creating a welcoming and functional environment for residents.”

The new headquarters has been designed to address the limitations of the District’s current facility, which was originally built in 1958 and was not designed to accommodate the District’s current staffing levels or the technological and operational demands of modern policing.
