Port Washington Police District Celebrates Five Graduates of Youth Internship Program

The Port Washington Police District recently celebrated the completion of its youth internship program, honoring Ashley Cartaya, Alivia Saunders, Deisy Luna, Karina Vides and Viviana Marquina for successfully completing the program. The five interns, whom are all students at Paul D. Schreiber High School, were presented with Certificates of Completion for their time spent with the District this summer.

“We strongly believe in the importance of building trust and transparency between our District and the community, and our youth internship program helps us work toward that goal,” said PWPD Chairman Sean McCarthy. “Ashley, Alivia, Deisy, Karina and Viviana brought enthusiasm, curiosity and a strong willingness to learn to every aspect of the program. We hope this experience inspires them to continue exploring careers in law enforcement and public service.”

Throughout the program, the interns participated in a range of activities designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of law enforcement operations. Their experiences included police ride-alongs, self-defense training, and exposure to munitions and Taser training, giving them a firsthand look at the skills, equipment and preparation required of police officers.

The interns also gained experience with the planning and community-facing side of police work. They played an important role in helping to organize the ceremonial walkout for former Chief Robert Del Muro and the swearing-in ceremony for Chief Kevin McCarroll, two important milestones for the Police District.

“Our internship program is unique because it gives young people meaningful exposure to the many responsibilities that come with a career in law enforcement,” said PWPD Sgt. Peter Griffith. “These five interns were engaged throughout the program and approached each opportunity with maturity and professionalism. We are proud of all they accomplished and look forward to seeing where their interests and education take them next.”
