Port Washington Police: Swastikas Inside Club Not A Hate Crime

Police in Port Washington are investigating after a swastika was found spray-painted inside the Police Athletic League building.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY – Police in Port Washington are investigating after a swastika was found spray-painted inside the Police Athletic League building.

The swastikas were discovered following a break-in at the club and are considered a crime of opportunity, Newsday reported.

"We don't consider this a hate crime," Police Chief Robert DelMuro told Newsday.

According to the DelMurro, the damage was contained to inside the building and passersby could not see it.

Rob Elkins, executive director of the athletic league, reported the incident to the Nassau County DA's Hate Crime Unit, Newsday reported. Elkins found the swastikas Monday night.
