Port Washington Wrestler Wins Big as Eighth Grader

A middle school wrestler from Port Washington is breaking varsity records before even entering high school.

Dan Gibson, an eighth grade wrestler at Weber Middle School who is a varsity wrestler for the high school, became the youngest wrestler in Schreiber High School History to earn All-County honors.

Gibson took second at the County Championship and was awarded his medal by Long Island native and UFC fighter Chris Weidman.

Gibson also became the youngest wrestler in the Port Washington program to reach the NYSPHSAA Section VIII Finals on Sunday at the Mack Arena at Hofstra University.

The eighth grader won his preliminary and quarterfinal matches before knocking off the top-seed in the semifinals.

Gibson finished his season 25-5 overall wrestling in two weight classes, with a 9-3 record at 113 pounds and a 16-2 record at 106 pounds.

He will compete in the off-season at the NHSCA National tournament in Virginia Beach in March as well as a number of other national level competitions.
