Swastika Found on Bathroom Wall at Schreiber High School

The school district said they will identify and punish the person responsible.

An investigation into who is responsible for drawing a swastika on the boys' bathroom wall at Paul D. Schreiber High School on Thursday is underway, the Port Washington Union Free School District said.

A student discovered the symbol that morning and reported his findings to the school.

“This type of behavior is completely unacceptable, does not represent who we are as a school district or community, and will not be tolerated,” Port Washington UFSD Superintendent Kathleen A. Mooney said in a statement.

Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken once the person responsible for drawing the swastika is identified, Mooney said.

A high school senior posted a picture of the symbol on social media expressing his outrage. The student, who wished to be unnamed, said he wanted to speak out for members of his family 70 years ago who didn’t have a voice.

“Why someone had to scribble a swastika in a bathroom is beyond me,” the student wrote. “The saddest part of this whole thing is that the person(s) who drew this think this is a joke. A swastika is not a joke.”

A large chunk of Port Washington’s population is Jewish and there are several synagogues located within the community.

The Port Washington UFSD wants to assure the community they will not tolerate symbols of hate graffitied on school property.

“As a school district, we have and always will provide a nurturing and supportive environment free of prejudice, where we teach our students to be both tolerant and respectful toward others,” Mooney said.
