West Shore Road Bus Pilot Begins

A one-year NICE shuttle bus pilot operates during AM/PM rush between Port Washington and Roslyn LIRR station making stops along the route.

Over two years ago, Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton was contacted by representatives of The Amsterdam assisted living facility and nearby industrial park business owners about the need for a bus to connect West Shore Road with the Port Washington and Roslyn LIRR stations.

A key reason why both of these groups advocated for a bus is to serve current and potential employees who use public transportation to commute to and from work. Some current employees walk three miles from the Roslyn LIRR station in the morning and back at night regardless of the weather. It was understandably difficult to attract potential employees with these commuting conditions. Also, residents of The Amsterdam have been forced to use taxis to leave the facility since they no longer drive.

After Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton held numerous meetings with representatives of NICE (Nassau Inter County Express) bus system, the West Shore Road business complex and The Amsterdam assisted living facility a shuttle bus pilot program was finally funded and organized. “I am so pleased that this shuttle service has become a reality,” Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton said. “Our committee has worked very hard to get it going and I thank everyone for all their efforts. We’re also grateful to State Assemblyman Tony D’Urso, who was able to help the County fund this pilot.”

The “Shore Road Shuttle pilot program began on January 21 and will last for a full year. The route for the 15-seat handicap accessible bus is a loop that runs between the Port Washington and Roslyn LIRR stations, making stops on West Shore Road at Fairway Drive, on Industrial Park Drive and the Roslyn Clock Tower MTA bus stop. The shuttle will operate during peak commuting hours (6:15 – 10:15 a.m. and 3:45 – 8:00 p.m.), timed to coincide with LIRR schedules at the Port Washington and Roslyn stations.
