The incident comes as cops and city officials grapple with a surge in shootings across the five boroughs.

The weeks-long spike most recently came to a head Fourth of July weekend, when 64 people were shot in at least 45 shootings across the city. Last year, there were 16 shooting incidents and 21 victims during the same time period.

Another particularly violent night last week — when at least five people were shot in Brooklyn in the span of two hours — prompted the borough president to ask for a "crisis response" from the New York City Police Department.
