Agenda includes: guest speakers; discuss action on issues.
In compiling issues of common interest, we found land use related items (*see list below) to be a prime concern. And so, at our last meeting, we had an informative session, featuring many pointed comments and questions, with the Vice Chair of the NYC Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA).
To follow up, we have invitedCity Councilmembers Gale Brewer, Chair, Governmental Operations Committee, and Leroy Comrie, Jr., Chair, Land Use Committee, to tell us about the responsibility of their committees, how we might relate to them, to discuss how to proceed at protecting the character of neighborhoods, and assure civic input is considered and issues are addressed by agencies like the BSA and City Planning.
This is an opportunity for many of Brooklyn’s civic leaders to interact with the heads of key City Council Committees at one time. Please put the date on your calendar now. We’ll email a reminder with directions as Jan. 10 approaches.
On behalf of the BNC, we wish you a Happy Holiday Season and New Year.

* List of land use concerns:
Decision making at Standards & Appeals (BSA), City Planning, and Dept. of Buildings – regarding zoning, variances, special permits, and eminent domain.
Who is defining the character of neighborhoods?
The “Manhattanization” of Brooklyn. The communication – dissemination of information process at DOB is obscure. Concern with landmarking process. Need to clarify zoning and building rules regarding air space and air rights. Need to preserve and expand affordable housing – rental apartments.
