FDNY Firefighters Save Baby After Performing Emergency NYC Home Birth

QUEENS, NY — FDNY firefighters saved the life of a newborn baby in Queens after performing an emergency home birth last Saturday, officials said.

Members from Engine 277 responded to a 911 call for an imminent birth at a home on Myrtle Avenue on April 11.

When they arrived at the scene, the baby was already being delivered.

Firefighter Jeffrey Jovin, a former paramedic with experience assisting in childbirth, realized the newborn wasn't breathing and had no pulse, the FDNY said.

Jovin immediately began CPR as another member assisted with ventilation until EMS arrived.

Together with EMS, Jovin helped cut the umbilical cord and continued lifesaving efforts while rushing the newborn to an ambulance.

At the hospital, the baby regained a pulse and began breathing.

"Once we got to the hospital, the baby regained a pulse
and was breathing. It was a beautiful delivery," Jovin said in a statement.
