QUEENS, NY — A young woman from Queens was fatally struck by a box truck while crossing a New York City street Friday morning, police said.
Jenny Maribel Chacho Sanchez, 29, was using a crosswalk to cross Gates Avenue just before 8:30 a.m. when she was hit by a 2024 Freightliner being driven by an unidentified 49‑year‑old man, investigators said.
Chacho Sanchez was rushed to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in critical condition, where she was later pronounced dead.
According to police, she had sustained head and body trauma.
As of Monday, the driver does not appear to be facing immediate charges as police continue to investigate the crash. He reportedly continued on his route after striking the victim but was stopped by officers about a block from the scene, according to police and reports.
Police said Monday that the investigation remains ongoing.
Chacho Sánchez is survived by her 6‑year‑old child, according to reports.
In the wake of her death, her father launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to repatriate her remains to her native Ecuador, where her family hopes to give her a final burial.
