Brandywine The Savoy by Monarch proudly honored several of its resident veterans this Memorial Day as they participated in the Little Neck-Douglaston Memorial Day Parade in Queens, New York, widely recognized as the largest Memorial Day parade in the United States.
Residents, families, and staff gathered for an unforgettable and emotional experience as Brandywine veterans proudly rode through the historic parade route aboard the Brandywine bus, representing generations of American courage, patriotism, and sacrifice.
Participating veterans included Joel Zubisky, Joe Bellaccico, Jose Ayala, Edward Avila, John Sarar, and Arnold Gilbert. Together, these distinguished gentlemen represented multiple branches of the United States military, including the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force. Joining them for the special day were fellow residents, spouses, Brandywine’s Resident Council President, and additional community members, totaling 12 residents in attendance.
One especially moving story belonged to resident veteran John Sarar, who was born in Croatia and risked his life escaping to America in pursuit of freedom and opportunity. After arriving in the United States, the very first thing he chose to do was join the United States Navy, proudly serving and defending the country that had given him a new beginning. His remarkable story served as a powerful reminder of the freedoms Memorial Day represents and the sacrifices made to protect them.
As the Brandywine bus traveled through the parade, residents were greeted with applause, waving American flags, and heartfelt appreciation from the surrounding community. For many residents and families, the experience was deeply emotional a proud and meaningful opportunity to honor those who dedicated their lives to serving the nation.
“At Brandywine The Savoy by Monarch, we believe every veteran’s story deserves to be remembered, honored, and celebrated,” said Donna Lapidus, Life Enrichment Director at Brandywine The Savoy by Monarch. “To see our residents recognized during such a historic Memorial Day tradition was incredibly meaningful for everyone involved.”
The day served as a touching tribute not only to the residents who served, but also to all military men and women whose courage and sacrifice continue to inspire future generations.
