Their case highlights how often dogs suffer abuse citywide and how Buster's Law can bring felony charges and registry restrictions for offenders. Queens residents considering adoption can now offer these dogs a new start.
4. Groceries & The Rise of the Supermarket Chain (newyorkalmanack.com subscription) — Queens gets a notable shoutout as the birthplace of King Kullen, often credited as the first true supermarket when it opened there in 1930. The piece traces how self-service chains like A&P and Piggly Wiggly reshaped grocery shopping, squeezing out small independent grocers and wholesalers across New York State and beyond.
