📰 News we're reading

1. Nepali, Tibetan New Yorkers grieve the missing and dead in epic flooding (gothamist.com) — Queens' Nepali and Tibetan communities, especially in Jackson Heights, Woodside, and Elmhurst, are mourning loved ones lost or missing after catastrophic flooding on the Nepal-Tibet border. Local group Adhikaar is opening its Queens space for gatherings, wellness sessions, and Nepali-language mental health referrals, while a Woodside-based Tibetan organization holds Buddhist prayers to support grieving families here.

2. Astoria shootout: South Ozone Park gunman charged with opening fire on two men was himself wounded in frenzy of bullets (qns.com) — A 19-year-old South Ozone Park man is charged in a late-night shootout near Steinway Street in Astoria that left him and two others wounded. Queens Criminal Court prosecutors say surveillance video shows gunfire exchanged between two cars, with victims later turning up at Queens Hospital Center and Mount Sinai Queens as police recovered dozens of shell casings.

3. Father and son stabbed defending moped from robbers outside Queens home (nydailynews.com) — A father and son were stabbed while confronting two men allegedly trying to steal a moped outside their Bayside, Queens home just after midnight Friday. Both were seriously injured but got themselves to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital and are expected to survive, while the suspects fled on a different moped and remain at large.

4. MTA Weekender: August 28-31, 2026 (mta.info) — If you're traveling between Queens and Manhattan this weekend, expect major subway changes, including suspended service on some lines between Queensboro Plaza and Times Square and rerouted trains via Roosevelt Island. The MTA is also running shuttle buses for other closures and offering extended Rockaway service for beachgoers, so plan ahead before heading out from Queens neighborhoods.

5. Staten Island's flag just become law, Queens' might be next — Queens Daily Eagle (queenseagle.com) — Queens leaders are moving to finally make the borough's century-old blue-and-white flag legally official, following Staten Island's success in codifying its own banner. Several Queens councilmembers and Borough President Donovan Richards back the effort, which would give formal recognition to a flag rich with local history, symbolism, and pride that already flies over Borough Hall and around the borough.
