📰 News we're reading

• Two groups that helped Greater Ridgewood area survive tough times: Our Neighborhood, The Way it Was (qns.com) — Local volunteers and business leaders in Ridgewood, Glendale, Maspeth, and Middle Village helped stabilize the neighborhood during the city's 1970s crisis, laying the groundwork for today's thriving Myrtle Avenue shopping strip. Their efforts evolved into the 104th Precinct Civilian Observation Patrol and the Myrtle Avenue Business Improvement District, which still support safety, cleanliness, and small businesses serving Queens residents today.

• Surfers ignore nor'easter warnings and dangers, catch high waves off Rockaway Beach (amedpost.com) — Powerful nor'easter surf is pounding Rockaway Beach in Queens, drawing about 20 surfers to Beach 91st Street despite official warnings to stay out of the water. Local residents and visitors describe boards snapping and exhausting conditions as Gov. Kathy Hochul urges New Yorkers to avoid life‑threatening rip currents and high surf this weekend.

• Trump and Mamdani Discuss Plan for 'Entire New Neighborhood' in NYC as Housing Costs Soar (lmtonline.com) — A proposed massive redevelopment over Sunnyside Yard in Queens could bring 12,000 homes and 30,000 jobs if New York City secures $21 billion in federal support. President Trump and Mayor Zohran Mamdani say they want the project to ease soaring housing costs, which have pushed Queens rents up nearly 6% in the past year.
