Blizzard Pummels Queens With 22.2 Inches, Among NYC’s Snowiest Areas

When the blizzard clears, neighborhood families can hit local parks for sledding and enjoy the heavy snowfall.

QUEENS, NY — Parts of Queens are among NYC’s snowiest neighborhoods in the ongoing blizzard, as residents dig out from heavy Monday accumulations.

The National Weather Service reported 22.2 inches at LaGuardia Airport, 20.2 inches in Jackson Heights, 19.8 inches at JFK Airport, and 18 inches just south of Astoria — totals that grounded hundreds of flights amid the powerful winter storm hitting the city.

Forecasters warned of dangerous conditions on untreated roads across the five boroughs, urging caution amid delayed trains.

As of 11 a.m. Feb. 23, C train service in Manhattan and Brooklyn was suspended, according to the MTA’s website. The F, N, G, M, W and 7 lines were experiencing significant delays, and buses boroughwide were running behind schedule.

New York City has lifted the emergency ban on non-essential road travel during Monday's blizzard, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Monday afternoon.

Roads remain icy, however, with up to 2.3 more inches of snow expected throughout the day, the mayor said.

"If you choose to drive, please exercise caution, travel slowly, and be mindful of others on the road.
We continue to advise New Yorkers to stay safe and stay indoors as much as possible," Mamdani wrote on X.

By Monday evening, the storm will exit the area, but harsh winds and icy roads will persist despite frequent plowing. A light rain-snow mix could return Tuesday night.

Queens families ready to enjoy the snow can head to local parks for sledding. The Parks Department highlights big hills at Juniper Valley Park in Middle Village and Forest Park on the Forest Hills border, plus Astoria Park's southern edge off Ditmars Boulevard.

Other top Queens sledding spots include Bowne Park, Crocheron Park, and Kissena Park.
