Here are the top three stories in Queens today:
- A Long Island City high-rise tower has been voted down by a community board over neighborhood concerns. The project by Quadrum Global was rejected last week, as members said developers had failed to account for its impact on the surrounding neighborhood. However, the board has no formal power to stop the project, which will head next to the Board of Standards and Appeals. (Patch)
- A Queens water main break wreaked havoc on the Tuesday morning commute after it ruptured during the overnight hours. The worst part of the flooding started on Queens Plaza South coming into Vernon Boulevard just after 2:00 a.m., causing a number of parked vehicles to be partially submerged in the flood waters for more than an hour. As of the time of this writing, it's unclear what caused the water main break. (NBC New York)
- A Woodside street has been co-named after a former spokesman to the Queens Borough President. On Saturday, a ceremony was held at the intersection of 54th Street and 32nd Avenue, which is now co-named Daniel Andrews Way. The street was co-named in honor of the longtime Woodside resident who passed away in 2020 at the age of 72 after spending his career as a political reporter and press secretary. (Astoria Post)
