BMW Driver Killed Barreling Into East River In Queens

Police pulled the body of Martins Gonzales, 24, from a submerged SUV late Sunday, hours after he drove into the water, cops said.

ASTORIA, QUEENS — A man died after he barreled a BMW through Astoria's Rainey Park, smashed a fence and drove into the East River, authorities said.

Police pulled the body of Martins Gonzales, 24, of Centereach, from a submerged SUV late Sunday, NYPD officials said.

Gonzales actually drove into the water hours earlier, about 3:30 a.m. when police received a 911 call about a river rescue inside the park, officials said.

Crash investigators believe that Gonzales drove a 2021 white BMW SUV through a park entrance near 34th Street and Vernon Boulevard, authorities said. His SUV barreled west through the park before it smashed through a fence and into the East River, police said.

Police are still investigating what led to the crash and death, officials said.
