Here are the top stories today in Queens:
1. On Monday, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell declared that the NYPD will be working overtime to ensure that U.S. Open spectators safely enjoy the tournament, which is one of the most heavily attended sporting events in the world. Over 750,000 tennis fans are expected to flood into Queens in the next two weeks. Police officials will provide security not only around the tennis stadiums themselves, but will also closely monitor public transportation.
2. Migrants sent from Texas will not be housed at the Hotel De Point in College Point following Councilwoman Vickie Paladino's stance against the plan. On Friday, Paladino voiced her concerns over the lack of resources already available to members of the College Point community, and the inability of the district to provide the specialized services the migrants require. Paladino, a Republican, also expressed various other hot-button opinions.
3. The Queens Museum recently announced that it will establish a new children's museum on site as part of its massive renovation and expansion project. In addition to the new family-friendly space, the renovation will also include upgrades in energy efficiency, and $6 million in accessibility enhancements. These improvements are part of the final stage of a $69 million renovation project that began back in 2013. Construction on the children's museum is expected to begin in 2023 or 2024, according to The Architect's Newspaper.
4. Architecture studio LOT-EK announced that its traveling structure, 'The Cubes,' has found a permanent home in Long Island Ciy's Socrates Sculpture Park. Construction recently began on the project, which will transform eighteen shipping containers into administrative offices and indoor space for community programming. Once it is complete sometime in early 2024, The Cubes will be the park's first permanent structure in its thirty-year history.
5. One year after Hurricane Ida struck the Tri-State Area, CBS2 checked in with families whose homes were flooded in Queens. Those living in basement apartments were hit especially hard by the storm -- most of the city's storm-related deaths were in basement apartments. To prevent something similar from happening again, local leaders, along with a non-profit, are pushing to legalize basement apartments.
