16-Year-Old Charged With Handgun Possession: Police

Officers investigating a burglar alarm found the teen with the handgun, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A 16-year-old was arrested and charged after he was found with a handgun in Riverhead, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, the incident took place on Sunday at 10:30 p.m. when officers responded to a call for a commercial burglar alarm on Old Country Road. Police said they performed a canvass around the exterior of the building and encountered four individuals to the rear of the location.

One was acting "in a suspicious manner" and was not compliant with the officer, police said. After further investigation, the teen was found to be in possession of a 9mm handgun, police said.

He was taken into custody and charged with one count of criminal possession of a firearm, felony, police said. The teen was released to a parent with a future court date, police said.

Further investigation into the commercial burglar alarm showed that the building was not broken into, police said.
