2 Local Surfers Saved In Brave Rescue: Police

A teen from Wading River and another surfer from Shoreham were rescued during fierce winds and huge swells Tuesday, police say.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — Two surfers from were Wading River and Shoreham were rescued from Shinnecock Inlet during Tuesday's pounding waves and high winds.

According to Southampton Town Police, the rescue took place at 10 a.m. when a 911 call came in; Southampton Town Police bay constables rushed to the Shinnecock Inlet, where one surfer, Kyle Rudonicki, 16, of Wading River, was found clinging to the jetty and the second was not immediately located.

The Southampton Village Police Department and Southampton Fire Department responded to the teen, pulling him to safety while Southampton Town bay constables continued searching for the second surfer, Brendan Hickey, 24, of Shoreham, who was located 300 yards south of the inlet in the Atlantic Ocean and pulled to safety, police said.

While underway on the 25 foot Silver Ship, bay constables fought 9 foot waves with a wind speed of 30 miles per hour, police said.

Rudonick was checked out by Southampton Village first responders after being pulled off the jetty and medically cleared; Hickey refused medical attention but suffered from exhaustion while attempting to paddle to shore, police said.
