RIVERHEAD, NY — Riverhead High School junior Matt Zambriski has made history.

Recently, he was named the sixth best Long Island high school baseball pitcher for the 2026 season by Newsday. Matt also earned a spot on Newsday’s list of the Top 100 high school baseball players on Long Island this season, the Riverhead Central School District said.

"As a sophomore last year, Matt threw the first perfect game in school history," said Riverhead High School Varsity Baseball Head Coach Kevin Kerman. "He was also on the mound for our playoff-clinching victory last year, helping accomplish something that had not been done in 10 years at Riverhead."

A powerful right-handed pitcher, Matt compiled a 3-0 record and 1.50 ERA during the 2025 season, the district said.

In 40 1/3 innings, he struck out 70 batters and helped lead Riverhead to its first playoff appearance since 2015, the district said.

Matt also contributed a great deal at the plate, batting .312 with a .408 on-base percentage and 21 RBIs, district officials said.

In addition to his success on the mound, Matt plays shortstop and first base for the Blue Waves. Following his anticipated graduation from Riverhead High School next year, Matt plans to continue his academic and baseball career at St. John’s University.

"Matt is a role model for our entire program," said Coach Kerman. "Even beyond baseball, he is truly a great person. He has worked very hard for his achievements, and the sky is the limit for him, especially as a junior."
