RIVERHEAD, NY — A pedestrian was hit and seriously injured after being struck on County Road 58 in Riverhead Wednesday night, police said.
According to Riverhead Town police, the crash took place at about 10:03 p.m., east of Ostrander Avenue in the vicinity of BJ's gas station.
Responding units located a male victim lying in the roadway with an apparent head wound, police said.
The Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the scene, and the male subject was subsequently transported from the area to Stony Brook University Hospital due to the nature of his injuries, police said.
The operator of the vehicle was identified as a man, 70, of Seaford, police said.
An investigation conducted at the scene determined that the male subject had been attempting to cross Route 58 on foot from south to north when he was struck in the westbound lane by the driver's 2021 Ford Ranger, which was heading westbound, police said.
The male subject's injuries were serious, and life -threatening in nature, police said.
The driver remained at the scene and no charges have been filed, police said.
