Prosecutors say he abused a camera blind spot and threatened to plant contraband, while officials stress that most officers serve professionally and that such abuses will be aggressively prosecuted.
2. Riverhead Railroad Festival is full steam ahead for 2026 (timesreview.com) — Riverhead's Railroad Museum is gearing up for its 22nd annual Railroad Festival on Aug. 29 and 30, with rides, live music, vendors, and historic train displays on Griffing Avenue. Families can also ride the LIRR "Greenport Scoot" between Riverhead and Greenport and explore both museum sites while celebrating 30 years of the museum's Riverhead location.
3. Police: Tobacco and vape compliance checks find no violations in Riverhead (riverheadlocal.com) — Riverhead Police say all 23 local retailers checked in an Aug. 24 sweep were following laws against selling tobacco and vape products to anyone under 21. The COPE Division and Riverhead CAP partnered on the compliance checks, and police are urging residents to report any suspicious or criminal activity to the department's confidential crime hotline.
4. Residents debate Roanoke Avenue potential zoning shake-up (timesreview.com) — Riverhead officials are weighing zoning changes on Roanoke Avenue that would allow personal-service businesses by special permit, add upper-floor apartments, and limit business hours. Residents, civic leaders, and the town assessor are pushing back over parking, neighborhood impacts, and whether the town should change rules to accommodate new salons and studios when other zones already allow them.
5. North Fork sites celebrate America250 through History Hunt selfie challenge (timesreview.com) — Riverhead's Hallockville Museum Farm is one of several North Fork sites where residents can join a selfie-based "History Hunt" celebrating America's 250th birthday and compete for a $1,776 prize. By scanning QR codes at 26 Long Island museums and landmarks, participants enter the contest and are encouraged to explore local Revolutionary War history through tours and exhibits through Sept. 30.
