Riverhead IDA extends public comment on $35M Town Square hotel tax breaks after empty hearing (timesreview.com) — Riverhead's Industrial Development Agency got no in-person turnout at a hearing on substantial tax breaks for the proposed Peconic River Hotel, so it's extending written public comments through Monday, Oct. 5. The $35.1 million Town Square project seeks a 20-year enhanced property tax abatement and other exemptions, and residents will have another chance to weigh in at the next IDA meeting.
2. Championship Weekend Ready To Roar At Riverhead Raceway; Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek 77 On Saturday (racedayct.com) — Riverhead Raceway is set to wrap up its 2026 regular season this Saturday and Sunday with Championship Weekend, featuring the Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek 77 and multiple title-deciding races. Riverhead drivers are in the hunt across several divisions, and families can enjoy kids' activities, JuiceBox Racers, and extra-distance Enduro events, with tickets available online or at the track.
3. Halloween on Long Island 2026: Witchy pop-ups, costume breakfasts and spooky nights out (greaterlongisland.com) — Riverhead families can dive into Halloween at the Long Island Aquarium's Haunted Tree House nights and the Bats, Barnacles & Broomsticks celebration, both offering kid-friendly scares and treats. Adults can cap the season with a Halloween-night screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at The Suffolk, while many other Long Island towns host pop-ups, hayrides and bar crawls.
4. Leonard T. Rempe, 79 (riverheadlocal.com) — Longtime local resident Leonard T. Rempe of Calverton, a 1966 Riverhead High School graduate and self-employed plumber, has died at age 79. Family and friends can pay their respects at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead on Tuesday, Oct. 6, with a memorial service there the following morning, as his loved ones remember his devotion to family, boating, and camping.
5. Ex-NYS court officer Brian Burke talks about Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann's chilling admissions (newsday.com) — Riverhead figured prominently in the Gilgo Beach serial killer case, with Rex Heuermann's sentencing and many court appearances taking place at the Suffolk County courthouse and jail there. A retired state court officer now describes Heuermann's unsettling jailhouse conversations, his lack of remorse, and the religious language and manipulative behavior he displayed after hearing victims' families speak.
