Body Found In Woods Near Downtown Riverhead

The cause of death has not yet been determined, but appears to be a suicide according to police.

Police confirmed a body of a man in his 30s was found in the woods around 400 West Main Street in Riverhead on Tuesday at about 11:30 a.m. RiverheadLocal reports.

The cause or time of death has not yet been determined but it “might have been a suicide”, Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller told RiverheadLocal.

Police told The Suffolk Times that the man appeared to have died by hanging.

While the man’s identity has not yet been confirmed, police believe they know who he is after finding identification on the body and that he lived in the area, according to RiverheadLocal.

An acquaintance of the victim who may have been searching for him, according to the chief, discovered the body west of an office building between Court Street and Sweezy Avenue, according to RiverheadLocal.

The body was transported to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination, according to The Suffolk Times.
