Burglary, Shooting Investigation Underway In Calverton: Police

An investigation is ongoing to see if the burglary and shooting are connected, police say.

CALVERTON, NY — An investigation is underway to see if a burglary and shooting in Calverton are connected, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, a River Road resident called authorities on Sunday at 4:11 p.m. to say that someone had broken into his shed and stolen tools; a police report was filed documenting the incident.

Later, just before 10 p.m. on Sunday, the resident called back and said that the person had returned and was in the process of burglarizing the shed again, police said.

Upon police arrival, the owner of the residence reported that he had gone outside with a shotgun and fired a warning shot at the burglar, police said.

The burglar fled and he followed the individual to the Calverton Hills area of Calverton, police said.

A short time later the Suffolk County Police Department was contacted and advised that there was a victim of a shooting in Calverton Hills, police said.

He was transported to Stony Brook Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police said.

An ongoing investigation is underway to determine if the two incidents are linked, police said.
