Car Crashes Into Restaurant, Tree in Baiting Hallow

The 70-year-old driver told police he was attempting to back out of a parking space at the time of the crash.

A Fort Salonga man crashed his car into the entrance of the Cooperage Inn in Baiting Hallow and then a tree on Thursday night, according to Riverhead Town Police.

Police responded to an accident at the Inn, located on Sound Avenue at about 7:21 p.m., according to police.

After an initial investigation, police found that a 2006 Mercedes Benz was attempting to back out of a parking stall when the driver, Harold Adamo, 70, reported being unable to stop, and hit a parked car, police said.

He then proceeded forward through the parking lot coming in contact with the north side entrance to the restaurant, police said.

Adamo then put the car in reverse, traveling across the lawn striking a tree, according to police.

The Riverhead Town Fire Marshal responded to inspect the structural integrity of the restaurant entry way.

The exact cause of the accident is under investigation.
