RIVERHEAD, NY — The Riverhead community is mourning the loss of a beloved familiar face — and coming together to help raise funds for his funeral.

A GoFundMe page, John J. Donegan Memorial Fund, has raised $1,605 of its $6,000 goal in less than a day.

"Everyone who knew John, loved John. Always quick with a corny joke and smart wit. He was a staple in the town of Riverhead his entire life, and at 14 years old started as a much loved longtime employee of Cliff's Rendezvous , Cliff's Elbow Room, and Cliff's Elbow Too where he had remained for the last 34 years. Anyone who has ever been to one of these local spots has no doubt enjoyed a meal cooked by 'Donegan'."

On Friday, December 30, he suddenly passed away from a massive heart attack, she said.

"As many know, John lived with and took care of his mother Joan, and funds are much needed at this time to offset the unexpected expense of his final arrangements. All donations, in any amount, would be very gratefully appreciated."

Donations can also be made in person to Bobby at Cliff's Rendezvous, located at 313 East Main Street in Riverhead, she said.
