Crazy Sports Nights Benefits Victims of Traumatic Brain Injury

Teachers and staff went crazy for a good cause recently in Riverhead.

For the second year and a row, Riverhead Central School District teachers and staff went crazy for a good cause.

The second annual Crazy Sports Night, held on Friday, was sponsored by Riverhead's PTO Executive Council. Riverhead High School Principal Dave Wicks served as referee, and Doc Greenberger and Lorene Custer stepped up as master and madame of ceremonies.

Fun was had by all as teams participated in events including an obstacle course, complete with hula hoops and jump ropes. Another crowd pleaser was a "pass the grapefruit" chain, with teachers and staff passing a fuzzy fake grapefruit down the line.

Other activities included a three-shot basketball competition, won by the district office, a scooter race, and a three-legged sack race.

Finally, teams got revved up with a Tug-O-War, won by the high school against the middle school team, who were defending champs.

With some friendly competition in full swing, the first place trophy allegedly had to be wrestled from Middle School Principal Andrea Pekar and forcibly given to Wicks.

The event raised $5,427 for the Brendan House on Sound Avenue in Riverhead--a soon-to-be home for victims of traumatic brain injury. According to school officials, the hope is that former RHS student, who was badly burned by a gel candle, will reside at the facility as soon as it is fully remodeled.
