Disabled Mom, Family Facing Eviction, Desperate For Help

"We are about to be evicted with no place to go, no money to afford a new place — nothing."

RIVERHEAD, NY — A Riverhead family facing eviction is reaching out for help during a desperate time in their lives.

Joshua Wilson created a GoFundMe, "Wilson Family Fundraiser," in an effort to stem the tide and help find his family a new home. To donate, click here.

Wilson said his mom, sister and he are facing eviction.

"My mom is disabled and she's a widow," he said. "My dad passed away in 2004 from a heart attack that really shook our family, and from that point we've never really recovered since, physically, spiritually, or emotionally."

His mom, Wilson said, has done her best over the years to raise her children without her husband, and the kids were able to help with jobs of their own.

But, he said, "The past few months have been really tough."

In January, he said, he lost his job. "More bills were piling up than money was coming in," he said.

His mother's Social Security benefits weren't enough to pay the rent, even with help from his sister's part-time job.

"Problems just kept arising, from our car breaking down last fall, which really was hardship, as my mom can't walk long distances or take public transportation; we had to use cabs all the time," Wilson said.

Recently, he said, a friend of the family helped them to get a used car to help transport them from points A to B, "which really helped my mom get around better," he said.

But now, they are facing eviction and need to find a new home, receiving first a 30-day notice to vacate and then, a 72-hour notice from the sheriff's department.

"We are about to be evicted with no place to go, no money to afford a new place — nothing," he said. "Any contributions that we can reach to get to this goal to help us get into a new home, to get back on track — hopefully as I'll have a new job soon — we would truly appreciate it," Wilson said.
