RIVERHEAD, NY — A Riverhead woman is in desperate need of help to raise the thousands of dollars necessary to save her dog's life.

Christine Moran said her family's dog Luke was hit on Roanoke Avenue in Riverhead Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. A good Samaritan found him and called 911; the police brought him to the vet, she said.

Moran created a GoFundMe, "Luke's Journey to Recovery," to raise the $7,000 needed to help him.

"Our sweet boy Luke was hit by a car on Roanoke Avenue in Riverhead after curiosity got the best of him and he was somehow able to get out of our fenced-in yard," she wrote. "Luke has injuries to his lungs, hip, and shoulder and is in the hospital."

At first, he was in an oxygen chamber waiting until his lungs get strong enough for surgery; now, his lungs are ready but his shoulder is also broken in half and he needs a plate implanted, Moran said.

Moran said she's already gotten a loan for thousands, but more funds are needed. "The estimates we received are over $8,000," she said. "But Luke will make it through this. Doctors are convinced he will live a long and full life after surgery. Family, friends, and pet lovers that have offered to help can do so here. We love you for your friendship, caring, and love. We are looking forward to holding our boy Luke in our arms again and receiving his kisses."

She added: "My man, my baby, we will get through this."
