Dog Narrowly Escapes Death, Put On 'Kill' List

Pinky narrowly escaped being killed after she ran underneath a train — and then she was placed on a shelter's kill list.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A dog that survived a harrowing brush with death found herself on the kill list at a shelter.

According to the Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton, at the age of just 8 months, Pinky was running the streets and was seen by railroad passengers several times hanging around a train station.

Several people called animal control to pick Pinky up but their attempts were unsuccessful, officials said.

"As a train pulled into the station, animal control made yet another attempt to capture her but she ran onto the tracks underneath the train to escape them. The train began leaving the station and Pinky was literally still cowering on the tracks but ran out as it began to roll forward," a release from Kent said.

Pinky miraculously emerged unscathed from underneath, but she was ultimately captured with a net by animal control, officials said.

"As if her near brush with death wasn't enough, Pinky was targeted just two days later for euthanasia because the shelter was over capacity rescue. A stroke a luck bestowed her when a rescue group pulled Pinky from the 'kill list' and sent her to the Kent Animal Shelter. Pinky will be given medical care and all that she needs to prepare her for adoption to a forever home," Kent officials said.

And now, "Giving Tuesday" kicks off the holiday season, when individuals can donate, receiving tax deductions while also giving pets such as Pinky "a new leash on life."
