Drunk Driver Crashes into New Suffolk Embankment: Police

Initial reports mistakenly said the motorist had taken a dunk in the drink and driven into the water, police said.

NEW SUFFOLK, NY - A drunk driver crashed into an embankment in New Suffolk early Friday morning, police said.

But initial reports had the motorist taking a dunk in the drink, police said, when at first, it was believed that the car might have been driven into the water.

According to Southold Town Police, the accident took place at 1 a.m. on Jackson Street in New Suffolk when Aaron Avent, 25, of New Suffolk was arrested and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

Southold Town Police officers arrived to find that the vehicle was not in the water, but that it had crashed into an embankment, police said.

Avent was transported to Southold police headquarters and held for morning arraignment, police said.
