Flanders Community Garden Looks To Kick Off 2015 Season

Officials seek support from local businesses and communities.

In 2014, Councilwoman Christine Scalera spearheaded a community garden initiative at the David W. Crohan Community Center in Flanders and is now looking to kick off the 2015 season this spring.

The community garden promotes healthier eating habits, a sense of community, and environmental awareness.

“One of my goals with this project was to integrate the community garden into the town’s parks, youth, and senior services programs, with an eye toward promoting intergenerational activity, with the garden as a focal point,” Scalera said.

According to Scalera, her goal was accomplished when the garden produced over 300 pounds of vegetables and herbs which were donated to a local food pantry.

The remainder of the season’s harvest went to the community garden volunteers and the senior services and youth programs at the David W. Crohan Center.

This year the garden members hope to double their efforts and perhaps donate a portion of the harvest to additional pantries. In order to reach this goal the garden members are actively reaching out to local businesses and the community for sponsorships to help with this year’s growing season.

Some of the items on their wish list include gardening supplies, plants, seeds, fertilizers, soils, mulch, etc.

To date the garden has received support from Colorful Gardens and Hampton Dry Goods.
