Flanders Man Hospitalized After Alleged Assault at Riverhead Deli

The man told police he was hit in the head with a stick.

A Flanders man was hospitalized after being allegedly assaulted at a Riverhead Deli on Monday night, according to Riverhead Town Police.

Police received a call at about 11 p.m. in reference to a possible victim of an assault at the Quick Stop Deli at 1172 West Main Street.

When police arrived, the victim provided his name as Manuel Garcia, police said.

He told police that he was struck in the head with a stick, by a man known to him only as ‘Marvin’, police said.

The victim was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center to be treated for a laceration to the top of his head, police said.

The Riverhead Police Detective Division was requested and responded to the hospital for investigation.

Detectived determined that the victim was really Juan Canel, 27, according to police.

The investigation into the alleged assault is ongoing.
