High Speed Chase On LIE Ends In Riverhead: Cops

BREAKING: The driver was speeding more than 100 miles per hour, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A Riverhead man was apprehended after a high speed pursuit Monday night, police said.

According to Riverhead Police, the incident took place at 8:19 p.m. when authorities received a call from the Suffolk County Police Department about a vehicle entering the Riverhead Town jurisdiction.

SCPD reported that they were in a vehicle pursuit with a black Ford Focus that was heading eastbound on the Long Island Expressway approaching Exit 71, police said.

The driver was refusing to stop and was traveling at speeds more than 100 miles per hour, police said.

The driver exited the LIE at Exit 72 and continued heading east on Route 25; SCPD terminated the pursuit on Route 25 near Mill Road, police said.

Officers from SCPD and Riverhead Police canvassed the area for the vehicle; Riverhead Police ultimately located the vehicle in front of a River Road unit, police said.

George Demetriades, 45, of Riverhead, was seen walking away from the vehicle; he was taken into custody without incident and turned over to SCPD for processing, police said. Demetriades will be returned to Riverhead Police at a later date to face a third degree menacing charge related to a separate incident, police said.
