Homeless Pair Caught Shoplifting in Target: Police

The man and woman were arrested on Friday, police said.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A man and woman, both homeless, were arrested after they were caught shoplifting at Target in Riverhead Friday, police said.

According to Riverhead Police, Erol Baturer, 25, and Tara A. Garcia, 21, were arrested on Friday at 2:33 p.m. when police responded to Target, located at 1150 Old Country Road, after a report that two shoplifters had been nabbed.

Police determined that the pair stole assorted items by placing them in a shopping cart and attempting to exit the store without paying for them, authorities said.

The stolen merchandise totaled $1,729.02, police said.

Both Baturer and Garcia were arrested and charged with fourth degree grand larceny, a felony, police said.

They were transported to Riverhead Police headquarters for processing and held for morning arraignment at Riverhead Justice Court, police said.
