LI Man Fires Gun Inside Building, Leading To Standoff, Arrest: Police

RIVERHEAD, NY — A Mastic man was arrested Saturday night after reportedly shooting in a Riverhead building, leading to a nearly three-hour standoff, police said.
According to Riverhead Town police, the incident began at 3:51 p.m. when authorities received a report about a man shooting a gun inside the building on Kroemer Avenue.
Multiple officers from the Riverhead Police Department responded and began to cordon off the area for public safety and closing off the street, police said.

The Riverhead Police Department's detective squad and K-9 unit also responded, police said. Also onhand to assist were the Suffolk County Police Department's emergency services, hostage negotiation, and electronic investigations sections, police said. The New York State Police, Southold Police Department, and New York State Environmental Conservation Police also responded, authorities said.
The Riverhead Volunteer Fire Department and the Riverhead Town Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded and were on standby, police said.

At approximately 6:57 p.m., the sole person involved, Anthony Almeida, 43, was taken into custody by the Suffolk County Police Department's Emergency Services units, police said.
The surrounding area was cleared and opened to traffic shortly after, and there was no further risk to the public, police said.
Almeida was arrested and charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, a felony, and second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor, police said.
