'Low Income — But Not Poor Enough': Woman Fighting Cancer

RIVERHEAD, NY — It's a journey many have walked: While battling cancer, a woman has found herself with crippling medical bills — and needs help.

A GoFundMe page, "Less Financial Stress," was created by Erica Mckee in Riverhead.

On the page, Mckee said she is "low income, but not poor enough for assistance."

With "only straight Medicare," Mckee said she is unable to afford supplemental insurance — but added that medical expenses for adenocarcinoma lung cancer and chemotherapy "are beyond my ability and means. At my 20% responsibility for doctors and treatment, the financial situation quickly spiraled out of my means and ability to keep up," she said.

"The bills since my August 17 lung surgery and subsequent oncology care are staggering. My car for transportation also has 253,000 miles on it and also needs frequent repairs and maintenance," she wrote. "Thank you for whatever help you may give."
