Update: Police Identify 2 Injured in Head-On Crash That Sparked Traffic Snarls

The accident took place on Route 105 early Friday, police said; the injuries were not life-threatening.

RIVERHEAD, NY - Update: 4:05 p.m.: After numerous 911 calls Friday morning at 8:35 a.m., Riverhead police responded to a serious accident on County Road 105, near Indian Island County Park.

Two vehicles, a 2015 Cadillac four-door sedan and a 2015 Chevrolet Express van, collided in a head-on crash in the northbound lanes, police said.

Further investigation revealed that the driver of the Cadillac, Reynel Bullock, 24, of Riverhead, while heading south on County Road 105, veered into and crossed over the center median into the northbound lanes of travel, police said.

Continuing south in the northbound lanes, the Cadillac struck a guard rail and then crashed head on into the 2015 Chevrolet Express van driven by Shawn Downs, 48, of Hauppauge, police said.

Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Riverhead Fire Department responded to the scene for emergency treatment and to extract the men from the vehicles, police said.

The New York State Police accident reconstruction unit was requested and responded to assist at the scene, police said. The north and southbound lanes of travel were closed to traffic while the investigation was conducted, police said.

Bullock was air lifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by Suffolk County Police aviation, and Shawn Downs was transported by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

Both men sustained injuries believed to non-life threatening, police said.

No charges were filed in the accident, police said.

Original story: A serious accident on Route 105 Friday morning left two injured and major traffic snarls in the area for the rest of the day, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, the accident took place at 8:35 a.m. and involved two vehicles. Two individuals were injured, with at least one airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital, police said.

Motorists at the scene who tried to make the left onto 105 were turned around this morning; the road was closed in both direction for hours, leading to heavy traffic and delays.

As of 2 p.m. the northbound road remained closed, police saId.

New York State Police were also on the scene.
