Man Brandishing Shotgun On Quad Sparks Chase: Police

BREAKING: The man refused to drop the shotgun and ran into his home, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A man with a shotgun driving a quad was apprehended Friday night in Riverhead, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, a call was received at 11:30 p.m. about a man brandishing a shotgun driving a quad in the area near the Riverhead Elks Lodge on East Main Street.

Responding officers were met in the parking lot by several witnesses who said they knew the man and that he had fled the area prior to their arrival and was possibly trying to make it back to his residence on Fanning Street in Riverhead, police said.

Officers found the man driving the quad on Fanning Street a short time later and attempted to get him to stop but he refused and continued to his house, where he got off the quad and ran toward the residence, police said.

The man, observed by officers to be in possession of a shotgun, refused repeated commands to drop the firearm and instead ran inside the residence and refused to come out, police said.

Numerous officers, including units from the New York State Police barracks in Riverside, responded to the area and were able to get the subject to surrender a short time later, police said.

Paul T. Jackson, 47, of Riverhead, was arrested and charged with second degree criminal possession of a weapon and other charges, police said.

He was held pending arraignment, police said.

The shotgun was recovered within the residence and the quad was impounded from the location, police said.
